Obituary of Elfriede Josefine Sachno

Elfriede J. Sachno, 93, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, in Morristown, New Jersey.

Born on April 6, 1932, in Heiligkreuz, Bavaria, Germany, Elfriede was the daughter of the late Adam Adrio and his wife Suzanne. Her life’s journey took her from growing up in Germany during the hardship of World War II to learning valuable household trades like baking, which she would carry with her throughout her life. In the early 1960s, Elfriede immigrated to the United States, where she built a life rooted in hard work, resilience, and deep care for her family.

Elfriede devoted herself to raising her two sons as a homemaker and worked diligently as an office cleaner until her retirement. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life—gardening, cooking, and baking were among her passions. Her famous Christmas butter cookies, nut balls, Barbarakuchen, and chicken soup were family favorites, always made with love and fondly remembered. She cherished the schöne Landschaften—the beautiful landscapes—of both America and Europe.

In addition to her parents, Elfriede was predeceased by her eldest son, George Sachno, and her life-partner, Theodor Hallmann.

She is survived by her younger son, Andrew Sachno, and his wife, Jenny, of Franklin, NJ; and her four beloved grandchildren: Corrina Sachno, Tanya Moody (née Sachno), Carolina Sachno, and Daniel Sachno. Elfriede adored her grandchildren and held them close to her heart.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. until 1:30 p.m.(eastern standard time) at Knoll-DeVoe Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 142 West Washington Avenue, Washington, NJ 07882. A funeral prayer service will follow at 1:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

Elfriede’s warmth, strength, and the aroma of her Christmas baking will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
