Obituary of Alonzo Bryan
Alonzo J. "Lonny" Bryan, age 96, of Centennial, Colorado died on March 7, 2014. Born in Washington, NJ he owned Bryan's Flowers on West Washington Ave. for over twenty years; was an organist in the United Methodist Church and other churches in Washington; substitute RFD carrier of the Washington Post Office for five years and coordinated the activities of the Washington Softball League for three years. He was a 1935 graduate of Washington High School. Lonny served as the State Councilor of the Jr. OUAM of New Jersey in 1945; President of the Kiwanis Club of Washington in 1952; Kiwanis District Governor in 1955 and secretary of the New Jersey Kiwanis District and Editor from 1956 through May 1964. Lonny served as Vice President of the Washington Board of Education; Director of the local YMCA; a member of Mansfield Lodge No. 36 F&AM and the Warren County Forest No. 14 Tall Cedars of Lebanon. In 1964, he joined the Staff of Kiwanis International in Chicago. In the position of Director of Field Service he coordinated the building of Kiwanis Clubs Worldwide. During the 1977-78 administrative year his team of Field Service Representatives organized 438 new Kiwanis Clubs, an all-time record that still holds. Commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel on May 21, 1976 by the Governor of the State of Kentucky. In 1981-82, he served as President of the Chicago Kiwanis Breakfast Club. In late 1982 he moved with the Kiwanis International Office to Indianapolis. Upon his retirement and move to Colorado he served as Interim Secretary of the Rocky Mountain Kiwanis District and was Editor of the District Bulletin for six years. Following his retirement he was appointed to several International Committees. In 1990-91 he was President of the Kiwanis Club of South Denver. Lonny worked many years for Wal-Mart in Colorado and was a member of the Cherry Hills Community Church. He was listed in the Who's Who from 1963 until his death. He is survived by six children: Donna Bacon, Centennial CO; Alonzo "Jay" Bryan, Jr., Fairfax VA; Nadine Lombardo, Nazareth PA; Brenda Reilly, Park Forest IL; Marlowe Bryan, St. Clair Shores MI; and Marilyn Gianino, Clinton Twp. MI; 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Donations may be made to Washington United Methodist Church, Washington, NJ.
