Harry Backer, JCP&L Lineman, Long time Member of Hampton Fire Co., passes at age 82
Harry G. Backer, 82, of Northampton County, PA, passed away on September 20, 2017
Harry was born in Stroudsburg, PA , September 3, 1935. He was the Son of the late Harry and Maude(Giveans) Backer were he grew up in Changewater, NJ.
Harry graduated North Hunterdon High School in 1954 and played football for the School.
Harry was a peacetime Veteran of the US Air Force from 1954 to 1958.
He joined the workforce at JCP&L in 1958 and worked there until his retirement in 2001.
Harry was a devoted member of the Hampton Vol. Fire Company for 49 years were he served as Chief in 1972 & 1973, and later served as President for 6 years. He was also a Life Member of the NJ State Fireman's Association.
He served on the Hampton School Board from 1974 to 1980, and served a term as President with that association
Harry loved to work in his bountiful garden, was thrilled by the hunt of collecting old postcards and bottles, and in his later years bided his time with competitive go-kart racing with his Grandsons. Harry was a Jack of all trades, and a Master of many.
His beloved wife of 52 years, Marilyn (Cregar) Backer, preceded him in death in 2011. Harry's daughter, Lori, also preceded him in death in 2011. Harry's biological mother, Jeanette (Hothouse) Frey also preceded Harry in death in 1996
Surviving Harry is his son Scott and his wife Kim of Nazareth, PA, and four grandsons. Kevin and his wife Alyssa of Palm Bay, FL, Cory of Melbourne, FL, Derrick of Shamokin Dam, PA and Owen of Nazareth, PA, along with several nieces and nephews and their families.
Harry's visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 28, 2017 from 2-4 and 6-9 PM with a Fireman's Service at 7:30PM. Final viewing will be Friday, Sept. 29th from 10-11 AM with a Funeral Service at 11:00, followed by a life celebration luncheon at Hampton Fire Co. Services will be held at Devoe Funeral Home, 136 West Washington Ave, Washington, NJ Inurnment will be private at the convenience of the family.
