Obituary of Kenneth Fox

Kenneth Fox, 91, formerly of Washington, NJ, died Sunday, September 11, 2011 at Moravian Hall Square in Nazareth, PA. Kenneth was born on May 27, 1920 in Dover, NJ, he was the only child of Claude and Nellie Scudder Fox. The family moved to Washington, NJ when he was 3 years old and he lived there most of his life. Ken graduated from Washington High School in 1938 where he played football as a right half back and earned the name " Scooter". He attended Lafayette College. He and his late wife, June Bamford Fox were married for 69 years. In his early years, he worked in the iron ore mine Scrub Oaks in Dover, NJ. He then worked at Ingersol Rand as an inspector in the machine shop. He also owned a distributorship for Ma's Old Fashioned Soda. Ken entered the United States Navy on May 29, 1944. After boot camp he was assigned to Radar School in Norfolk, VA. The Navy wanted him to stay there as an instructor, but Ken wanted sea duty. He was assigned to the destroyer, the USS McCormick ( DD223). He attained the rank of Radar Man 2nd Class. His ship served as an escort for the ship Savannah which was carrying President Roosevelt to the Crimean Conference. He was part of a skeleton crew that was with the McCormick when it was decommissioned. After the Navy, Ken returned to Washington, NJ. He then completed college at Temple University. His father asked him to come into the family business, Fox's Liquor Store, which his parents had started right after Prohibition in 1934. It was the first liquor store license issued in Warren County. Ken and June joined his parents in the business and later purchased it. Ken served as President of the Central Jersey Liquor Store Association, he was Treasurer of the New Jersey Liquor Store Association for 9 years and served on their Board of Directors. He also served 2 terms as a Director of the National Liquor Store Association. Ken and June were avid golfers. They enjoyed playing many different courses across the country. They also enjoyed taking cruises which included Alaska, Antarctica and the Panama Canal. Ken was a 65 year member of Mansfield Lodge #36 F&AM Washington, NJ and also a Member of Crescent Temple Shrine Trenton, NJ. He was a long time member of the Washington Methodist Church. He was a member of the Navy League. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 69 years; June Fox. He is survived by his daughter; Patricia Warne of Washington, NJ; two grandchildren, Dr. Gregory Warne of Oriskany, NY and Lori Ann Warne of Sinking Spring, PA; two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Kiera Warne. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at the DeVoe Funeral Service, Inc. A visitation will be held from 10-11:00 a.m. at the DeVoe Funeral Service, Inc., 136 West Washington Ave., Washington, NJ 07882.
