Obituary of James N Hotchkin

James N. “Jim” Hotchkin, 69 of Lebanon Twp. NJ died November 27, 2018 in the Hackettstown Medical Center, Hackettstown NJ.

Jim was born in the family home on Cornish street in Washington, NJ on July 23, 1949. He was the son of the late Howard and Katie Sadlon Hotchkin.

Jim worked in his parents' appliance business, Howard's TV & Appliance in Washington, NJ, eventually becoming part owner with his brothers, then finally sole owner. Jim was the guy that installed and fixed all the appliances, and there was no appliance that he couldn't fix. After the store closed, Jim worked for Parkway Appliance in Phillipsburg, NJ.

Jim graduated from the last class to graduate from Washington High School. He served in the US Navy from 1967-1973. While in the Navy Jim served on the 'Tin Can' USS Charles H. Roan DD-853. 

I'd like to add that Jim grew horseradish from the original root that his grandmother brought with her when she immigrated from Czechoslovakia in 1919.

He had the patience of a saint.

He was an avid Lionel train collector and loved creating and working on his annual Christmas display. Jim also enjoyed reading, working in his garden, camping, canoeing, working outside in the yard, and working around the house - from woodworking, to plumbing to electrical, he could do anything. He looked forward every year to winter and being outside in the snow. He loved discussing politics and attending the Hills Diner/Royal Diner breakfast club with his high school friends. Jim had a great sense of humor and of mischief, and was a great storyteller. Over the last year, he had a lot of fun feeding and befriending the local population of crows and observing their antics. Jim took great pride in his grandkids, Liam, Emma and Fiona; and Liam and "Poppy" shared a special affinity for fishing and greatly enjoyed their fishing trips together.

Surviving are his wife of 42 years, his little sweetheart Marianne Mayberry Hotchkin; two daughters, Jessica Day Everett (and her husband Ryan of Kunkletown, PA), and Emily Ann Hotchkin of Washington, NJ; and three grandchildren, Liam, Emma and Fiona Everett. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend and will be greatly missed.

Two brothers, Wayne and David, and a sister Susan, preceded him in death.

Jim requested to have no services, but to honor him with a donation to the Lebanon Township Fire Company, 532 Hill Road, Glen Gardner, NJ, 08826.
