Obituary of Lawrence Bowers

Lawrence "Larry" H. Bowers, 81 of Bethlehem Township, NJ, passed away with his loving wife Sharon and his graddaughter Carrie by his side on Thursday, March 12, 2015 in St Luke's Hospital Fountain Hill PA. Born on October 31, 1933, he was the son of the late Henry and Dorothy (Melligan) Bowers. Larry went to Hampton High School for two years. He then went to North Hunterdon High School and was a part of the first graduating class. While in high school, he excelled as a pitcher for the baseball team. He also played Trumpet in the school band. Upon graduation, he worked for the family farm with his father and mother until they sold the farm in 1969. He then went onto to work for the Bethlehem Township Road Department for nineteen years, retiring as a Foreman.  Larry raced Stock Cars all over the area, including tracks at Nazareth, Flemington, Englishtown NJ and Middletown NY. His car was the 1-B. He was also a member of the Yamaha Venture Motorcycle Club. After retiring from racing, he became an avid motorcycle enthusiast riding even in the winter. His first wife, Marie Sutton Bowers, passed away in 1980.  Larry is survived by his wife, Sharon (Erck) Bowers; two sisters, Carolyn Cordes of Glen Gardner NJ, and Joan Deats in Louisiana. four stepdaughters, Darlene, Carolyn, Barbara and Eleanor, twelve stepgrandchildren, twenty-one stepgreat grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. Among the step grandchildren, Carrie Gibson was very close to her grandfather. Preceding Larry in death. was a brother Michael, a sister Joyce Fields ,a stepson Walter "Butch" Burd,. Funeral Services will be Wednesday March 18th at 11am in the DeVoe Funeral Service 136 West Washington Ave Washington NJ. Viewing hours will be Tuesday March 17, 2015 from 6-8pm in the funeral home. The interment will be in the Musconetcong Valley Cemetery in Hampton NJ The family will accept flowers or donations to your favorite charity.
