Obituary of Alfred Sonny Stecker

Alfred “Sonny” G. Stecker, Sr., age 86, of Belvidere died Sunday, August 23, 2009 surrounded by his family at Warren Hospital of Phillipsburg, NJ. Alfred was born November 11, 1922 in Port Colden, NJ a son of the late Ezariah and the late Edna (Deemer) Stecker. He was one of thirteen children. He proudly served in the US Army during World War II and fought as a Private at the Battle of Normandy at Omaha Beach with Battery A, 741st Field Artillery Battalion. After returning from the war, he married Bernice Quigley of Washington, NJ in 1948. He was a Truck Driver in the construction of many local highways, dams and reservoirs. He was an avid Yankees fan. Sonny was one of the founding members of the Warren County Chapter of The Arc. He was also a member of the Blessed Hope Church of the Nazarene, Phillipsburg, NJ and the Teamsters Union Local 469 of Perth Amboy. He previously volunteered for Meals on Wheels and Warren Haven Nursing Home. He is survived by two daughters: Candi Stecker Frasier and her husband Art of Conway, SC and Tammy Stecker Kelson and her husband Charlie, of Bangor, PA and one son, Alan Stecker of Bangor, PA; two sisters: Laura Stecker and Helen ""Toot"" Rinehart, both of Washington, NJ; six grandchildren, three step grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Bernice, a son, Alfred “Butchie” G. Stecker, Jr., his parents, six brothers, four sisters and a daughter-in-law, Helen Stecker of Bangor, PA. Visitation will be Friday from 7:00 – 9:00 pm and Saturday 10:00 – 11:00 am at DeVoe Funeral Service Inc., 136 West Washington Ave, Washington, NJ. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 at the funeral home. Interment will follow immediately in Musconetcong Valley Cemetery, Hampton, NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to The ARC, Warren Chapter, PO Box 389, Washington NJ 07882 or Warren County Meals at Home, 165 Route 519 South, Belvidere, NJ 07823.
