It’s been almost a year since we lost you. I miss you and the smile you always brought to my face. You truly were a light in the lives of many and I continue to mourn you and the life you could’ve lived. You were a brilliant, kind, and beautiful person who deserved so much more than what you were given. All I wish is that you went peacefully and are happy wherever you are now. I love you.

Joanne was always someone I could look to for a good laugh or a smile. She was such a sweet girl and talking with her was always a pleasure. My condolences go out to everyone affected by this tragedy. Heaven gained an amazing soul and, Joanne, you are in my thoughts and prayers always.

I remember coming to school one day in sixth grade at CPS, and our teacher telling a few of my friends and I that a new student would be coming tomorrow and that she would be in our class. She told us that her name was Joanne, and my friends and I were so excited to meet her. The next day, Joanne came into school, and I remember her being so quiet, but I knew that a language barrier wouldn't be enough to keep my friends and I from getting to know her. Over the next few years, I remember coming home from school every day and thinking to myself how proud I was of Joanne for making so much progress since she first started school here. I know that coming into a new place by herself and not speaking the same language must have been so frustrating to deal with, but there was never a day where I didn't see her laugh, smile, or joke around with me, and she always came in every day being a little more talkative and comfortable than the last. I remember one day in seventh grade, when I went to my locker and saw a little note there waiting for me. It read, "Thank you for nice to me," and right then, I realized how much of a difference you can make in someone's life just by being kind. I am so glad that I kept that little note.
Joanne taught me that being kind and inclusive, no matter how small the gesture, never goes unnoticed, and that you can find happiness in the smallest of things. Her determination and excitement to learn continues to inspire me to keep working hard in school, and my friendship with her will forever be held so close to my heart. Whenever I see someone who looks a little scared, anxious, or in need of friend, I will never hesitate to step up and try to make them feel welcomed, because Joanne helped me to understand how much it really does help. I wish we went to the same high school so I could have continued to see her and talk to her every day, and I will forever miss the little jokes we had with each other, the doodles she drew in my notebook, and how happy it made me hearing her laugh. I will forever be grateful for the short time I had with Joanne, and I wish that I could see her just one last time to thank her for showing me how much friendship means to me.
All my love,
Julia Romero

Joanne was in my chem and math class and we would always partner up and have so many good laughs. Joanne was such a kind and humble person. She worked really hard in school and was so smart, but she would always tell other people that they were smart and was so quick to share encouraging words. I remember when Joanne and me were first becoming friends and she called me smart. I was actually so happy because it was coming from the girl who would get 100's on tests, while I was over here getting 70's. Joanne was a wonderful person and could make people smile so easily. I am really going to miss all of chem class memories and how she always just made me laugh. I really loved being around Joanne and and she was so easy to talk to. It's going to be hard without her and I am just in disbelief that she is gone. I hope that people can come together and help support you during this incredibly hard time. I am so sorry for your loss and my prayers go out to your family.

I had only met Joanne this year but I knew right away she was a kind and beautiful soul. She was in my Chemistry and Algebra II class and she was always willing to help people if they were struggling. Joanne was helpful, generous, and kind. I was seated at the same table as her for the majority of the year in Algebra II and it was a good time. Joanne will be greatly missed, rest easy Joanne.

The past few days have felt surreal. The earliest memory I have of Joanne is sitting with her in Mr. Harris's 7th-grade math class. She didn't know much English and I remember feeling frustrated not being able to help her. I've been blessed with watching Joanne grow from being a shy girl to a very intelligent, sweet, and funny, close friend of mine. I'm gonna remember all the times I shared with her at lunch, in Mrs. Priello's math class, Senora Morris's Spanish class, and Mrs. Simpson's English class. She would always tell me funny stories and help me with school work in directed study for the past two years. She was truly the smartest person I ever knew and I am extremely grateful to have known her. She never failed to make me smile and laugh even on my worst days. I'm gonna remember all the times you smiled and laughed at my stupid jokes. She will always be my inspiration of where hard work can get you in life. I wish I could see you one more time and tell you how much you impressed everyone you met with how kind and smart you were. I hope you rest easy Joanne, I love you and miss you very much.

It is super hard for me to write this right now... I'm still in shock and disbelief. Joanne was so special. She was ridiculously smart, talented, and her smile lit up the room! I remember the first time I ever met Joanne in 6th grade Language Arts class and I remember thinking I've never met someone as kind as her. Joanne made my friends and I cards with our names written in Chinese and we were all so amazed. What happened is so devastating. I'm praying David continues to get better, and I'm praying for her entire family mourning this tragedy. I wish I could see Joanne just one last time. God Bless Joanne, and everyone affected. Rest easy Joanne.
Love,
