Obituary of Patricia C. Szczech

Patricia C. Szczech, 81, died of natural causes on December 31, 2022, at the Mother Angeline McCrory Manor in Columbus, Ohio. Patricia was an accomplished nurse professional and retired assistant professor of nursing at Ohio Wesleyan University, where she shared her knowledge and skills with generations of nursing students.

Born October 8, 1941, in Brooklyn, NY, to parents Joseph Szczech and Cecilia Wroblewski, Patricia grew up in Springdale, CT where she attended public schools and graduated from Stamford High School. She received her initial nursing degree from the Grace New Haven School of Nursing, followed by a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Connecticut and a Master’s degree from New York University.

Prior to moving to Columbus, Patricia held various nursing positons at Yale New Haven Hospital, Stamford Hospital, where she was a head nurse and then director of its School of Nursing, and the Congregation of Notre Dame Sisters Convent.

Although she once considered specializing in pediatrics, Patricia came to realize that her true passion was in academics and teaching, which led her to the nurse education programs at Stamford Hospital and Ohio Wesleyan University. Among her various interests Patricia enjoyed travel and reading, and was a parishioner of the St. Thomas More Newman Church.

Survivors include her brother Joseph Szczech, Jr. and his wife Dale of East Haddam, CT. Along with all the people that touched Pat’s life Kathy Baker Jones of New Milford, CT was like a daughter to Pat. Patricia was predeceased by her beloved Aunt Sophie Szczech, next to whom she will be interred at a family gravesite along with Pat’s grandparents in Oxford, NJ.

Funeral services have been entrusted to the Knoll-DeVoe Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 142 West Washington, Ave., Washington, NJ. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Wednesday, Jan.11 from 9:30-10:30 am at the funeral home followed by an 11:00 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Rose of Lima RC Church, 85 Academy St., Oxford, NJ. Interment will follow at the church cemetery on Jonestown Rd.

Patricia’s family would like to thank the staff of Mother Angeline McCrory Manor and the Mount Carmel Hospice for the compassionate care provided to Patricia.
